Mareyalaarada Nenapu:KUVEMPU’S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED IN CITY

Mysore, Dec. 29- Today being the 109th birth anniversary of Rashtrakavi Kuvempu, a programme was organised jointly by Mysore City Corporation (MCC) and District Kannada Sahitya Prishat (KSP) at Vishvamanava Park near Gun House here this morning.

The underway development works at the park was halted to facilitate the conduct of the programme more as a customary ritual than a purposeful event.

The then government, under the tenure of S.M. Krishna as Chief Minister, was said to have funded Rs. 17.8 lakh to give a thorough facelift to the park. But the process reportedly never took off. MUDA reportedly commenced the work on March 13 this year with a mission to complete the work before Oct. 12.

Unfortunately, as of today, more of the assigned work were incomplete including the construction of an elevated dais, landscaping, laying of tiles, etc.

As a ritual, District In-charge Minister V. Sreenivasa Prasad garlanded the statue of the Rashtrakavi at the park.

Expressing Dissatisfaction over the arrangements, Prasad assumed that the District Administration would organise the ceremony in a befitting manner from next year onwards.

MUDA AEE Panduranga, speaking to SOM blamed the non-availability of sand for delay in development work.

DC pulled up: DC C. Shikha, who arrived late at the venue to invite Sreenivasa Prasad for the Cake Festival being held at Rajendra Kalamandira today, was pulled up by the Minister for arriving late to the programme. She then garlanded Kuvempu’s statue.

Kuvempu Always Stood for liberal values’

Poet laureate Kuvempu tried to explore and promote a new philosophy based on liberal values through his poems, literary critic Keshava Sharma has said.
He was addressing a symposium titled ‘Reading Kuvempu’ held at Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College in the city on Friday.
Referring to Kuvempu’s celebrated poem ‘O Nanna Chethana’ he said the writer called upon people to transcend the barriers of caste, religion and explore a new identity with the poem.
In poetry, Kuvempu becomes more philosophical and tries to explore the profound truths of life, he said.
The prose of Kuvempu, including his novels ‘Malegalalli Madhumagalu’ and ‘Kanuru Heggadathi’ documents the socio-cultural transformation in Malnad region.
He said that, the writers of Navya period were of the belief that a good literary work should have several layers of meaning. Kuvempu though has written some works in Navya style, he knew that poetry was not a mere intellectual exercise. Poems like ‘Hoguvenu naa’ could be appreciated and enjoyed even by common readers also, he said.
The liberal usage of Sanskrit words by Kuvempu in his poems has been misinterpreted by a section of literary critics. It is unfortunate that, these literary critics came to a hasty conclusion that Kuvempu’s poems lacked nativity. Kuvempu’s poems though were rich in aesthetic and philosophical elements, they could be easily comprehended by common readers also, he said.
Writer C. Ramaswamy who inaugurated the programme said that, Kuvempu was among the few Kannada writers who attained success in the all the genres of literature — poetry, novel, plays and literary criticism. ‘Ramayana Darshanam’ authored by Kuvempu gave a new direction to Kannada literature, he said.
Writer S.G. Siddaramaiah said that, Kuvempu attempted to reinterpret the mythologies in his works. The programme was organised by Besagarahalli Ramanna Pratishthana. Principal H. Jayadevappa, and Meti Mallikarjun of Department of Linguistics were present.
