Y. G. Parameshwara (Born:January 3, 1888 – Died:April 1, 1924) was a medical doctor in the state of Karnataka, India. He was the first Indian and one of the blind doctors in the world to become a doctor and practice medicine despite being blind. 

Early life

Dr. Y.G.Parameshwar was born at Yallambelase in Kadur taluk of Chikkamagaluru district. He studied medicine in Karnatak University but during his final year at MBBS he suffered retinal haemorrhage and lost his eyesight. He discontinued his studies for some time but was determined to complete his medical degree despite his vision being impaired. He succeeded in his venture and obtained an MBBS degree in 1977  With this, he became the first Indian and one of blind doctor in the world; the first one being Dr. David Hartman of the United States. On the personal front, he was married to his wife Prema and had two sons. Jacob Bolotin (January 3, 1888 – April 1, 1924) was the world's first totally blind physician fully licensed to practice medicine.

Pandit Puttaraj Gawai (ಪುಟ್ಟರಾಜ ಗವಾಯಿ) was born into a poor kannada Lingayat 

family in Devara Hospete in Hangal taluk of Haveri district of Karnataka. His parents were Revaiah Venkatapurmath and Siddamma. He lost his eyesight at a very early age.He lost his father when he was 10 months old. His maternal uncle Chandrashekharaiah took him under his wings and raised him.

Legendary musician Puttaraj Gavai passes away

Noted Hindustani and Carnatic exponent and instrumentalist Puttaraj Gavai passed away in Gadag on Friday at the age of 97 following illness

Also a writer, dramatist and social worker, the Padma Bhushan recipient died at Veereshwara Punyashrama, an institute for differently abled and destitutes run by him for several years.

Gavai, who was suffering from kidney problems and pneumonia, was shifted to the ashram from KLE Hospital in Belgaum as per his last wishes early this week.

A disciple of the great Panchakshara Gavai who carried forward his legacy, Putturaj not only rendered soulful music in both Hindustani and Carnatic, but penned literary works in various languages and staged plays under the 'Sri Guru Kumareshwara Krupa Poshita Natya Company' banner.

Born in a small village in Dharwad, Puttaraj turned blind in infancy. His mother, heeding advise by a fake healer, placed an insect on his eyes to cure him of an infection, an act that caused irreparable damage and robbed him of his vision.
