Sampath Kumar (Kannada: ಸಂಪತ್ ಕುಮಾರ್ 18 September 1950 – 30 December 2009), popularly known as Vishnuvardhan (Kannada: ವಿಷ್ಣುವರ್ಧನ್), was a prominent Indian film actor. He has acted in Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Tamil films. He has acted in over 220 movies in total that includes 200 Kannada movies, 5 Hindi movies, 5 Telugu movies, 3 Malayalam movies and 6 Tamil movies. He was more than just an actor and had acquired the "Demi-God status" in Karnataka and was called "The Phoenix Of Indian Cinema". Vishnuvardhan was popularly called as Sahasa Simha ('valorous lion'), Abhinava Bhargava(The Emperor Of Acting). He adopted the name Vishnuvardhan at the insistence of Puttanna Kanagal, who directed his maiden film, Naagarahaavu. This movie gave him the recognition of the 'angry young man of Kannada cinema'.



TRIBUTE and RESPECT from the Government


As an acknowledgement to his service to Indian cinema, the state government also decided to name its annual lifetime achievement award to long-serving film personalities after Vishnuvardhan, renaming it as the Karnataka State Dr. Vishnuvardhan Lifetime Achievement Award.


The government of India honored a Vishnuvardhan with stamps that have his name and face.




The State Government has named various roads and parks in the capital city Bengaluru after him. The Kathriguppe main road in Bengaluru has been named after him.The road stretching from Sarjapura to Kengeri in Bengaluru is named as "DR.VISHNUVARDHAN ROAD"



A park in jayanagar, Bengaluru has also been named as "DR.VISHNUVARDHAN PARK"



The government of Karnataka has also decided to build a film city in the name of Dr.Vishnuvardhan. It will be similar to the model of Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. Sources indicate that once the film city comes up, all Kannada films related work will be done under a single roof.



The government of Karnataka has paid tribute to him by joining hands with his fans associations by unveiling his statues in various places of Karnataka, especially in capital city Bengaluru. A seven feet tall statue in Gowri Palya on 1st March 2012, Laggere on 4th March 2012, Kengeri on 9th October 2011, KP Agrahara in Vijayanagar on 11th March 2012 and in other places of Bengaluru and Karnataka were unveiled.



Vishnuvardhan was cremated at the Ambhimaan Studios, in the outskirts of Bengaluru on Dec 30th 2009 with full state honors. Almost all the leading politicians and actors were present there.




AFTER VISHNU'S DEATH:


Celebrities around the world reacted with great shock to Vishnuvardhan's death. 

World class cricketer Anil Kumble, a big fan of the late actor, described his demise as a most devastating loss. He said "I have grown up watching his films. I have been Vishnu sir's ardent fan. It's the end of an era."



Bollywood actor and director Aamir Khan said "The untimely demise of super star Mr.Vishnuvardhan is a really sad incident. Mr Vishnuvardhan who is a huge star in Karnataka and has had a prolific career was only 59. Our condolences to his family, to all those who love him, and to all of Karnataka for whom he is such an icon. May his soul rest in peace"



Rajinikanth, a co-star of Vishnu in many films like Sahodarara Savaal, Indina Ramayana, Galaate Samsaara, Vidudalai etc. visited the late actor's family and said "Vishnu Sir helped me to get stardom and it was him, who encouraged me to take up initial offers in Tamil films. I cannot explain the value of our friendship. Our friendship was one that could be enjoyed, not one that could be expressed in words. I have no words to convey the sense of loss"



Cricketer Gundappa Viswanath said "We used to ride pillion on a bicycle to reach the ground to play cricket. He was my best buddy. It is a big loss to the country". Describing Vishnu as the greatest actor in the Kannada film industry, 



B. S. Yeddyurappa (the chief minister then) said: "His death is an irrepairable loss for the people of Karnataka and we should all try to follow in his footsteps to lead an ideal life." 



Chiranjeevi said, "The suddenness of Vishnuji's death has come as a shock. May God give his family the courage, strength and support".



Congress leader Siddaramaiah said, "I've lost a great friend". "Vishnu has orphaned the Kannada film industry. 



"We've lost a precious jewel", said senior actor Jayanthi. 



Former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda said, "He was known for his simplicity, It's a great loss".



While Dr.S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, Prakash Rai, Suhasini Maniratnam were all seen shedding tears, Ex-MP Dr.Ambareesh, the closest friend of Vishnu in his life time, couldn't bare the pain but still stood till the end and controlled the crowd brilliantly.



The External Affairs Minister then, S. M. Krishna after visiting the residence of the actor, termed the late actor as actor par-excellence and said for his amiable nature he would remain in the hearts of Kannadigas for ever. The minister recalled, how close the two were before nd Vishnu had assured him of presenting a suit after he took over as the Governor of Maharashtra. However he died before fulfilling his wish.



Actors like Mammooty, Mohanlal, Kamal Hassan, Amithabh Bachchan and other actors Sumalatha, P.Vasu, Saroja Devi, Dr.leelavathi and politicians R. Ashok, H. D. Kumaraswamy, Governor of Karnataka state Hansraj Bhardwaj (at the time of the demise), Mallikarjun Kharge, BJP leader Ananth Kumar and others mourned to his death.
