The Congress government restricted the number of awards to 58, as it is the 58th year of the state's formation. To avoid any controversies, the government had entrusted the responsibility of selecting the nominees to a committee headed by Jnanpith awardee U R Ananthamurthy.

In the past, the awards have run into many controversies . In 1992, the S Bangarappa government honoured 172 persons. In 2004, the SM Krishna government restricted the number to 60. But in 2005, the Congress-JD (S) regime broke the record by honouring 175 persons.

In 2006, the JD (S)-BJP government honoured only 50 persons and also evolved a policy to increase the number of award winners by one every year. But in 2009, the BS Yeddyurappa government broke the rules by presenting 93 awards .

Karnataka Rajyotsava-1st Nov, 2013

Karnataka Rajyotsava is celebrated on November 01, 2013. Kannada Rajyotsava, also called Karnataka Formation Day, is celebrated every year by Kannadigas in India and overseas. This was the day in 1956 when all the Kannada language-speaking regions of South India were merged to form the state of Karnataka. The Rajyotsava day is listed as a government holiday in the state of Karnataka and is celebrated by Kannadigas across the world. It is marked by the announcement and presentation of the honours list for Rajyotsava Awards by the Government of Karnataka, hoisting of the unofficial Karnataka flag with an address from the Chief Minister and Governor of the state along with community festivals, orchestra, Kannada book releases and concerts.

Rajyotsava awards 2013: Will it be an Ahinda show all the way?

Bengaluru: When Karnataka celebrates its 58th Kannada Rajyotsava day on Friday, you can expect as many as 58 eminent personalities from across 20 disciplines to bag the second highest civilian award – the Rajyotsava Award.

The selection committee headed by Jnanpith awardee Dr U.R. Ananthamurthy, on Sunday, sat through a marathon meeting in the city, studying the 200 names that remained on the list, after scrutinizing some 3,500 applications. With Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reportedly insisting that only 58 names should be there in the final list, the panel was busy trying to balance the two criteria —merit and social justice— as directed by the CM.
According to sources, Siddaramaiah has ruled out the possibility of yielding to any lobby. Instead, the CM is said to have directed the panel to strictly pick those nominees, who are perceived to be achievers by the common man and not those who have recommendation from heavyweights.
With the final list likely to be announced in a day or two, sources say, it would come as no surprise if the majority of those in the list belong to the Ahinda (backward classes and minorities) category.
In 2012, the Jagadish Shettar government had chosen 57 individuals along with seven organizations for the award. In 2011, then chief minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda had defended his decision of limiting the number of awards to 50, stating `it will give the award its due sanctity’.
A jumbo list of 159 awardees made it to the 2010 awards when B.S. Yeddyurappa was chief minister. As rains and floods caused havoc in North Karnataka in 2009, there was no Rajyotsava celebration. In 2008, the Yeddyurappa government honoured 92 personalities with the award and also enhanced the cash prize from

Rs 10,000 to Rs one lakh.

The quiet gentleman-K.S. Ashwath

K S Ashwath
In K.S. Ashwath's death we have lost a great artiste who gave a new dimension to the role of a supporting actor.

K.S. Ashwath, among Kannada cinema's real actors, is no more. Sadly, this “star-driven” industry made no exceptions to even a phenomenal actor like Ashwath. He, who lent a new dimension to every role that he played, Ashwath was truly someone who expanded the horizon of the supporting actor.

Putting A Price On Human Life-Dr. Devi Shetty

How much is a human life worth? It’s a question very few of us have had to answer.
Dr. Devi Shetty, an India-based cardiac surgeon and humanitarian, offers world-leading heart surgeries at a fraction of what it costs in America. Can the U.S. health care system learn a thing or two from Dr. Shetty?

But for Dr. Devi Shetty, a cardiovascular surgeon and founder of 14 heart hospitals in India, this question is part of his daily job.
I recently had the privilege of spending three days with Dr. Shetty and accompanying him to the Stanford Graduate School of Business where he gave an inspiring talk called “Putting a Price on Human Life.”
